Sometime in the 1980s.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003eIt’s dark, but the neighborhood is alive. Porch lights glow up and down the street. Jack-o’-lanterns flicker on front steps, and you can smell freshly carved pumpkin hanging in the cool October air.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003eYou’re wearing one of those costumes we all remember. Maybe it’s the plastic outfit and hard mask with the little elastic string digging into the back of your head. Maybe Mom covered your face in makeup so you could be a pirate, a monster, or a werewolf. Maybe somebody emptied half a can of hairspray getting ready.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003eProbably all of the above.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003eYou hit the sidewalk with your friends, carrying a plastic pumpkin full of candy. Fallen leaves crunch under your shoes. There’s the smell of grass and hay somewhere in the background.
